Fittler Brace Gives Australia U20 Record-Breaking Spain Rout

Australia U20 made the loudest opening statement in Pool D as Zach Fittler’s late call-up turned into a two-try cameo in a 90-22 demolition of Spain at the Junior World Championship.

The Junior Wallabies ran in 14 tries at AIA Arena in Kutaisi, moving straight to the top of the pool on points difference after the first matchday. World Rugby confirmed the score as Australia’s highest in tournament history, beating the 86-0 mark set against Canada in 2009.

Australia’s Pool D marker

Fittler crossed twice after being pushed into the matchday squad, while Ewald Kruger and TJ Talaileva also scored doubles. Luca Cleverley, Eli Langi, Angus Grover, Edwin Langi, Chayse Geros, Tom Robinson, Sam Blank and Charlie Hollyman completed the Australian try list.

Spain were overwhelmed before the contest had any real scoreboard tension, but their second-half response carried value. Ivan Farace, Mauro del Campo and Oriol Marsinyac Garcia, who scored twice, gave Los Leones U20 four tries and a losing bonus point.

The result gives Australia a sharper platform than France, who also opened Pool D with a bonus-point win after beating Fiji 45-15. That sets up a pool dynamic where attacking margin may matter quickly, even before the direct heavyweight meeting arrives.

It also strengthens the early tournament platform around headline squad figures such as Treyvon Pritchard, who started the Spain opener after being thrust into the side during the final build-up.

Why it matters

  • Scoreline: Australia U20 90-22 Spain U20.
  • Tries: Australia scored 14; Spain scored four.
  • Pool impact: Australia lead Pool D on points difference after round one.

For a side chasing a first Junior World Championship title after finishing runners-up in 2010 and 2019, this was more than a flat-track win. It was a warning shot: Australia have arrived with pace, depth and enough finishing power to stress the tournament favourites immediately.
