England U20 opened their Junior World Championship campaign with a 34-27 win over Ireland U20 in Tbilisi, but the Pool C table already tells a more complicated story.
Andy Titterrell’s side took five points from a bruising opener at Avchala Stadium, a result confirmed on the World Rugby match centre, while Ireland left with two bonus points after staying within seven and scoring four tries.
That matters. Argentina’s heavy win over USA has already distorted Pool C’s points difference column, meaning England’s victory gives them control but not comfort before the second round. Ireland’s losing return still leaves them within striking distance if they beat Argentina next.
Ryan hat-trick keeps Ireland alive
RugbyPass reported that Connacht winger Daniel Ryan scored a hat-trick in the 34-27 defeat, an individual return that kept Ireland in range even as England found the heavier contact moments and finished the job.
It also sharpened the pre-match questions around Ireland’s attacking edge. As outlined in Read Rugby Union’s England vs Ireland U20 preview, this was never a soft entry point for Sami Bishti’s side, given England’s tournament pedigree and Pool C’s unforgiving format.
Ireland now face Argentina on Thursday, 2 July, with little margin left. England move on to USA knowing the win was clean enough for the table, but not dominant enough to settle the pool.
