London Irish are still exploring possible entries into either the Gallagher PREM or URC, as their planned return to professional rugby continues, as published by CityAM.

The club filed for administration in 2023, and were later purchased by the late Formula 1 team owner Eddie Jordan in 2025. Now the ownership are looking for a way back into professional rugby.

What’s the plan?

Recent changes to the English game mean London Irish can apply for a place in the second-tier Champ with a view to being promoted to the top flight. This route still remains the main focus, and is actively being explored by the Irish ownership, which features Kyle Jordan, Eddie’s son.

There is also a controversial plan to enter the multi-national URC. With recent legal precedent being set relating to football’s failed European Super League, this would mean that the RFU can’t block Irish’s move to the URC. This is despite sources at the governing body previously stating that the club would need the RFU’s explicit permission.

The Financial side of things

london Irish are using the same investment platform, Republic, used by PREM club Gloucester Rugby to raise funds in exchange for equity. It is understood that London Irish have millions in commitments ahead of launching their raise.

London Irish doesn’t currently have a professional club. The club’s training ground, Hazlewood, is used by rugby league team London Broncos. There is an associated amateur side in the sixth tier of English Rugby, while the training ground could be used for Champ games.

A spokesperson for London Irish said: “We are exploring all options for restoring London Irish as a professional club in ways that are exciting and sustainable over the long term. Once we have clarity on that path, we will inform the London Irish community.”
