Munster announced today that Lock Edwin Edogbo has signed a contract extension, keeping him at the province until at least 2027. This news will come as a positive, after the province announced a voluntary redundancy plan was being outlined due to mounting financial pressures.
Munster have not had the best of seasons so far. In the URC, they are currently in sixth with nine wins from 15 games. They were knocked out of the Champions Cup in the group phase before losing in the Challenge Cup to Exeter.
Edogbo’s Whirlwind Start
The 23-year-old Ireland international came up through the ranks at Cobh Pirates and UCC. He became the first player from Cobh to enter the Munster Rugby Academy in 2021. He has made 29 appearances for Munster in his short career so far, scoring seven tries.
Edogbo made his Munster debut away at Dragons in 2022, and made eight appearances in Munster’s URC title-winning campaign of 2022/23. His third start saw him help Munster to a brilliant win over South Africa A at Páirc Uí Chaoimh in November 2022.
However, Edogbo missed all of last season due to an achilles injury. He returned to action in October against Edinburgh. He then started the following week in the win against Leinster at Croke Park. Edogbo has since made 14 appearances so far this campaign, including his Champions Cup debut against Bath.
International Honours
Edogbo became the latest Academy graduate to make his Ireland debut, as his impressive form earned him a call-up for the Six Nations squad. He made his first appearance in the Green of Ireland in their demolition of Italy in February. However, that experience was marred slightly as he was subjected to despicable online racist abuse.
