Joshua Kenny has gone from uncertainty to one of the standout stories of the season, emerging as a genuine breakout star for Leinster Rugby.
The 22-year-old winger only made his senior debut in October, yet he now sits among the leading try scorers in the United Rugby Championship — a rise that has been as swift as it has impressive.
From Doubt to Dominance
Kenny’s journey to this point has been anything but straightforward.
Less than a year ago, his future in the sport was uncertain following the closure of Ireland’s Sevens programme. Having represented his country on the global circuit, he suddenly found himself at a crossroads.
“I really enjoyed my time there,” Kenny said. “To travel the world and play rugby at the same time was a really cool experience.
“Then, when it ended, there was a decision in our hands — whether we wanted to keep playing or hang up the boots.”
Kenny chose to push forward. That decision has paid off.
Grabbing His Opportunity at Leinster
After knocking on Leinster’s door and impressing in training, Kenny earned his debut off the bench against the Sharks.
He has not looked back since.
A first start against Zebre brought two tries. More doubles followed against Dragons RFC, Stade Rochelais and the Scarlets, underlining his instinctive finishing ability.
In just 12 appearances, Kenny has crossed the line 11 times. Nine of those tries have come in the URC, placing him level with Evan Roos and Sean Jansen at the top of the charts.
“I’m just delighted I got the opportunity to prove myself,” Kenny said. “I’ve tried to keep things simple and take my chances when they come.”
Sevens Background Paying Dividends
Kenny credits his Sevens experience as a key factor in his rapid adaptation to the 15-a-side game.
“The biggest thing it taught me was dealing with pressure in every moment,” he explained.
“In Sevens, you might only get one chance to score. If you don’t take it, that’s it. The same goes for defence — every tackle matters.”
That clarity under pressure has translated seamlessly into his current role, where his ability to read situations and execute quickly has made him a constant threat.
Earning Recognition
His form has not gone unnoticed.
Kenny’s performances earned him a call-up to the Ireland XV for a fixture against England A rugby union team at Thomond Park. He marked the occasion fittingly by scoring.
It was another step in what is quickly becoming a remarkable ascent.
Driving Leinster Forward
Kenny’s contributions have also played a role in Leinster’s resurgence this season.
After a slow start in their title defence, the province now sits firmly in the play-off picture, building momentum across competitions. A recent run of victories has been fuelled by attacking efficiency, where Kenny has been central.
Despite the attention, his approach remains grounded.
“I don’t think there’s any secret,” he said. “It’s just about taking each game as it comes and focusing on what’s in front of you.
“It sounds cliché, but that’s been my mindset — and it’s worked so far.”
A Star on the Rise
Kenny’s rise may have been unexpected, but it no longer looks accidental.
From Sevens uncertainty to URC top try scorer, he has taken every opportunity placed in front of him and turned it into momentum.
If this trajectory continues, his breakthrough season will not just be remembered as a strong debut campaign; it could mark the beginning of something much bigger.
