A ‘lot of uncertainty’ for Ospreys and Scarlets, says director of rugby

It is not the easiest time to be a fan of Welsh rugby, with the national team currently in a complicated relationship with the international game—a third wooden spoon in a row in the Six Nations was only somewhat remedied by an impressive win over Italy at home.

One of the most prominent issues affecting the sport in Wales is the planned downsizing of Welsh teams, from the current four teams to only three, and it seems like the teams on the chopping block are the Ospreys and Scarlets.

There is no clear answer at the time of writing as to which team it will be, but there has been a statement released which might not fill fans of either team with any particular new hope.

‘Concern for everybody’ in the Welsh setup according to Scarlets’ Nigel Davies

The Ospreys and Scarlets sit 11th and 14th in the URC table at the moment, and in the past four seasons have only made the playoffs once between them—as Scarlets were knocked out by Leinster in the 2024/25 quarterfinals.

Continual failure to contend has meant that the atmosphere of the fanbase at the two clubs has soured, and with the news recently that it was certain a team in the West of Wales would be cut and out of the URC, it has only made supporters even more concerned.

Speaking on this to the BBC, Scarlets’ director of rugby Nigel Davies administered an ominous verdict for the two clubs:

“There is still a lot of uncertainty… it is natural that there is concern for everybody and particularly if you are involved with the Scarlets and Ospreys… whether we like it or not, the Welsh Rugby Union, Ospreys and Scarlets are in the same eco-system and have to work together and put our heads together… we all want the same—what’s good for Welsh rugby.”

For the Ospreys, this precarious situation, as well as financial struggles, has assumedly been a motivator for key duo, and Welsh national team members, Dewi Lake and Jac Morgan, in departing the team come this summer.

On a more positive note, the recent success of the Dragons in the Challenge Cup has meant that at least one Welsh team is experiencing success in some metric, with their win over Zebre Parma booking the team into the Challenge Cup semi-final.
