Veteran winger Christian Wade will remain with the Newcastle Red Bulls next season after agreeing a one-year contract extension with the Premiership side.

The 34-year-old joined the club in December following a spell with Wigan Warriors in rugby league.

This adds another chapter to a sporting career that has spanned two codes of rugby, along with a stint in the NFL.

Since arriving in the North East, Wade has made five appearances for Newcastle, crossing the try line twice as he continues his pursuit of the all-time Gallagher Premiership try-scoring record.

Christian Wade’s reputation before Newcastle

Before his move north, Wade built a reputation as one of the competition’s most prolific finishers during spells with Wasps and Gloucester Rugby.

His career also famously took him to the United States, where he spent time in the NFL through the International Player Pathway programme.

Despite the varied journey, Wade says he has quickly settled into life at Newcastle.

Speaking after confirming the extension, Wade said he was eager to continue building on the start he has made.

“I’m really excited to continue this journey with Newcastle Red Bulls,” he said. “From the moment I arrived here, I’ve loved the energy around the club and the support from our fans.

“My wife has been part of this journey with me long before the NFL, and we both really enjoy the lifestyle here in Newcastle. It’s a great place for us, on and off the field.

“I’m looking forward to the challenge ahead and bringing my experience, leadership and personality to help make this team the best it can be.”

Newcastle’s opinions on Christian Wade

Newcastle’s sporting general manager Neil McIlroy believes Wade’s influence has already been felt both on and off the pitch.

“Christian has been a really positive influence on the squad since his arrival in December, and the way he looks after himself is an example to all players,” McIlroy said.

“He has been unlucky with a couple of injuries which were outside of his control, but in the games he has played he has made plenty of positive contributions.”

McIlroy also highlighted the winger’s willingness to share his experience with younger members of the squad.

“For such a renowned finisher, he is very unselfish in the way he goes about his work, and he has been brilliant in sharing his experience with our younger players,” he added.

“He still has a big contribution to make for us as we look to advance this club, and I’m really happy that he has agreed to another season.”

With his future now confirmed, Wade will look to add to his tally in the closing stages of the season while continuing his pursuit of one of English rugby’s most coveted scoring records.
