Three key battles in the Wales v England clash
Gareth Anscombe v Owen Farrell.
If selected, Gareth Anscombe provides more subtle attacking weapons than Dan Biggar would. He’s perhaps the riskier selection of the two but it’s the right one if Wales want to play a more varied and fluid game. Anscombe is dependable from the tee, although without the range of Biggar. Defensively he is the weaker of the two so he’ll need the help of his team mates around him if England decide to attack his channel.
Owen Farrell is a nailed on selection for Saturday’s game. His aggression, exceptional goal kicking, impressive kicking out of hand and improved attacking skills make him a great asset. Farrell seems to be extremely mentally tough which is what you want for your fly-half, and he’s evidently moved on from the hotheadedness of days gone by.
Winner – Farrell.
Jon Davies v Manu Tuilagi.
Although not a direct match up with Jonathan Davies at outside centre and Manu Tuilagi at inside centre, it will be interesting to see who comes out on top and who influences the game the most.
Davies is a key player for Wales and has been for some time. Although he doesn’t have out-and-out gas, he is a strong and powerful runner. In addition, he has good hands for a big man, his size helps out in a defensive sense too and he possesses a big left boot. The only significant drawback is a slight susceptibility to injury but that’s probably a bit harsh, especially in such a high contact sport as rugby.
Manu Tuilagi has always been an outstanding talent. His injury and discipline problems are well documented. Now he’s back England will be hoping he can stay injury free and go under the referee’s radar by keeping his nose clean. Fatherhood has changed and matured him for the better. He’s dangerous with the ball in hand and very strong in the tackle.
Tie.
Alun Wyn Jones v Courtney Lawes.
Alun Wyn Jones has a brilliant all around game and is a player who is looked up to by those around him. His vast experience makes him a calming influence on the Welsh team. His warrior-like qualities will be needed if Wales are to prosper.
Courtney Lawes qualities are clear to see. His well-timed, hits are prone to driving the opposition backwards. He’s good in the line-out and his decision-making has improved over the years. No longer does he give away penalties at the rate he used to.
Narrow win for Alun Wyn Jones in this battle of the second rowers.
