Wales kicked off the 2019 Six Nations with a 19-24 victory over France in Paris. Wet conditions played a huge part, with errors costing both teams, but Warren Gatland’s men came out on top at the Stade De France.
Two second half tries from George North and one from Tomos Williams saw the travelling side complete a brilliant come back after being 16-0 down at half-time. It is the third year in a row that Wales have won their opening game.
France started superbly, with Picamoles and Huget crossing the whitewash. But a strong Welsh comeback was completed when a wayward cross-field pass from lock Sebastien Vahaamahina was intercepted by George North who scored under the posts.
Wales will be hoping to carry this momentum into next week when they take on Italy at the Stadio Olimpico.
France also hit the road as they take on England at Twickenham.
Here’s how I rated the Wales team.
Liam Williams - 8
The shining light in a poor first half for Wales. Unfortunate not to score after a fumble on the line. Was brilliant under the high ball all evening.
George North - 8
A game of two halves. Mistake allowed Huget to score but showed great determination to capitalize on two French errors.
Jonathan Davies - 6
Struggled to make an impact but was starved of any chances.
Hadleigh Parkes - 5
Did his job without shining. Solid in midfield but caught offside on a few occasions.
Josh Adams - 6
Quiet first half but a brilliant line break from out of norwhere allowed Tomos Williams to open the scoring for Wales.
Gareth Anscombe - 5
Struggled with the boot all evening and in danger of losing his shirt next week
Tomos Williams - 7
Showed good chemistry with Anscombe in their first game together. Showed good pace to get on the shoulder of Adams for his try. Box-kicking needs work.
Rob Evans - 7
A key factor in a great welsh scrum. Combated a 50kg weight disadvantage well.
Ken Owens - 6
Good in the scrum but a few poor line-outs, excusable in the conditions.
Tomas Francis - 6
Strong in the scrum all evening. Stayed solid in defence when called upon.
Adam Beard - 5
Quiet in both defence and attack. First man to be subbed. Could be replaced next week.
Alun Wyn Jones (c) - 6
A poor first half but responded well with a good defensive display in the second half. Wrong decision at the end of the first half allowed a late Lopez drop goal.
Josh Navidi - 7
Strong at the breakdown in the second half. Really grew into the game.
Justin Tipuric - 8
Brilliant all evening. A solid defensive display and disruptive from the line-out. Crucial charge down on Lopez with the scores close.
Ross Moriarty - 8
Strong performance after a long injury lay-off. Close to scoring before being brought back for obstruction.Carried well throughout.
Replacements - 7
Biggar kicked well when called upon. Silly mistake in own 22 almost cost Davies but looked good with ball in hand. Forwards continued scrum dominance late into the game.
