No stopping Brad Shields playing for England says future boss Dai Young

Current Wasps head coach Dai Young believes Brad Shields will be free to play for England this summer if selected by boss Eddie Jones, Coventry Live report.

The current Hurricanes flanker is set to join the Aviva Premiership and Wasps at the start of next season.

Shields has made it no secret that he is desperate for international rugby with England, and the Kiwi is believed to be eligible for England selection despite being born in New Zealand and playing his whole rugby career in the country.

Shields’ father was born in England, meaning Shields qualifies for an England call-up, something Jones is looking into after a poor Six Nations campaign.

Talking to the media, future boss Young said:

I think he’s made a commitment, I’ll make no bones about it, in coming to Wasps he wants to do well at Wasps because he wants to play international rugby. That’s part of the process. He’s dual-qualified to play for England through his parents. I don’t see how they could stop him playing anyway.

The flanker reportedly turned down an All Blacks call-up towards the end of last year as he wanted to keep his hopes of playing international rugby for England.

The saga continues, however, we may not have to wait too much longer to see Shields wearing an England top.
