Adam Jones to retire at the end of the season

Veteran Welsh tight-head prop Adam Jones is to retire from rugby at the end of the season.

The 37-year-old began his career in professional rugby 18 years ago, playing for Neath. He then transitioned with the club into Ospreys, and stayed there until the end of the 2014 season. A move to Cardiff Blues took up just one season, before a subsequent transfer to Harlequins.

Jones made 235 appearances for Ospreys and Neath respectively.

For his country, Jones was part of three Grand Slam Welsh teams, as he received 95 Wales caps, the first coming back in 2003.

Retiring from international rugby in 2015, Jones played in three World Cups in his career.

In addition to his international pedigree, Jones also played a critical part in two British and Irish Lions tours, making five appearances in a Lions jersey.

Speaking to BBC Wales, Jones said:

It’s been an amazing career, a fantastic 18 years,

A lot of people probably thought I already was retired because I haven’t been on the pitch this year, but I gave it another go this year in a player-coach role and have been lucky enough to have been given that shot by Harlequins.

I haven’t missed playing. It’s not been like every weekend I’ve been itching to get on the field.

Jones will stay on as Harlequins scrum coach after the completion of the season.
