Eddie Jones ‘sorry’ for remarks about Wales and Ireland

England head coach Eddie Jones has apologised for comments made about Ireland and Wales at a sponsors’ dinner in July of last year.

At the event in question, Jones referred to Wales as a “s**t little place”, and called the Irish “scummy”.

In reference to his side’s defeat to Ireland in the 2017 Six Nations, Jones was heard to say:

I am still dirty about that game. We’ll get that back, we’ll get that back don’t worry. We’ve got them next year at home, we’ll get them back.

We’ve played 23 Tests, we’ve only lost one Test to the scummy Irish.

On a similar line of offensiveness, Jones approached Wales by saying:

Who knows Wales? Are there any Welsh people here? So it’s this little s**t place that has got three million people. Three million!

The Australian’s remarks have been labelled inappropriate by the Rugby Football Union, and a spokesperson said they would be apologising to their opposite numbers in the Irish and Welsh unions in due course.

Jones himself said:

No excuses. I shouldn’t have said what I did.

I’m very sorry for any offence caused.
