Former Ireland captain Jamie Heaslip announces retirement

Former Ireland captain Jamie Heaslip has announced his retirement from the sport at the age of 34 after persistent injury problems, according to a report on BBC Sport.

Heaslip first appeared in an Ireland shirt more than a decade ago in 2006 and went on to captain the side 13 times in his career.

The number eight managed to feature for Ireland 95 times and also played for Leinster and the Lions, but he struggled constantly with injury problems which have ultimately led him to retirement.

Heaslip has particularly struggled with injuries to his back and after careful consideration, he has decided to call time on his distinguished playing career.

The back row forward has been sidelined for several months after undergoing a second operation on his back and has decided to retire with immediate effect.

He said:

Every professional sportsperson always hopes to be able to leave their chosen sport on their terms but too often that’s not the case.

I have had to take on board the medical advice that I have been given and after talking to Sheena and my family I have taken the difficult decision to retire with immediate effect from playing rugby in order to ensure my future well being.

Heaslip won three Six Nations titles with Ireland, two Triple Crowns and one Grand Slam, whereas for Leinster, he secured three Heineken Cups and three Pro12 titles.
