Ireland stung with Sexton injury scare

According to Sky Sports, Johnny Sexton, the maestro behind Ireland’s back-to-back RBS Six Nations titles has today become an injury concern for the upcoming tournament after suffering another concussion in Leinster’s heavy defeat by Wasps.

The fly-half, captaining his province for the first time on his 100th appearance, was receiving on-field treatment following a clash of heads with ex-Leinster teammate and Wasps centre Brendan Macken when the ball returned to play and he broke off to make a tackle.

It was judged, however, that Ireland’s first-choice fly-half, who has had a history of concussion in the past few seasons, was not fit to continue play and was required to leave the field of play after just nine minutes.

Leinster tweeted saying:

Leinster head coach, Leo Cullen later said:

He just got a head knock. We’ll get him assessed and see how he is but he’s up and about in the dressing room, fine there.

Ireland are set to face Wales in their opening fixture of this season’s Six Nations on February 7 and will hope their talisman and general will be fit for the fixture as Joe Schmidt’s men seek to be the first side in the championships history to win three titles in three years.
