Care backs Robshaw to keep England captaincy

Scrum-half Danny Care has claimed that his Harlequins and England team-mate Chris Robshaw should retain his national team captaincy, despite a dire 2015 Rugby World Cup.

Robshaw has been subject of much criticism, making some controversial calls which aided England to World Cup failure, unsuccessfully qualifying for the knock-out stages as the host-nation.

However, Harlequins number-9 Danny Care has backed his team-mate to retain England captaincy, saying that he can’t think of many other candidates he’d pick ahead of the 29-year-old flanker.

“It’s a huge honour to play for your country once, to captain it must be an unbelievable feeling,” Care said to the Telegraph.

“I’m sure he’s dying to stay in the role and we’ll have to see what Eddie wants to say and what stamp he wants to put on the team, but there aren’t many others I’d pick ahead of him.”

Robshaw has come back from the World Cup and performed brilliantly for Harlequins in the Aviva Premiership. Harlequins beat London Irish 38-7 on Saturday in what was a convincing performance from Robshaw and Care.

“It’s the measure of the man to see how he’s come back and how well he has played for Quins,” added Care.

“He has every man and his dog throwing his opinion, saying he shouldn’t be captain. For me, he’s a great England captain and it’s tough to see him take the stick that he does. But he gets on with it, works hard and tries to prove people wrong. Hopefully he’s doing that at the moment.”
