Exeter’s back-row forward Dave Ewers has signed a new contract with the Exeter Cheifs, meaning he is now contracted until the end of the 2018 season.
Ewers, 24, who was born in Zimbabwe but qualifies to play for England, has played at Exeter for the whole of his career, but has also been dual-registered in the past to play for the Cornish Pirates in the Championship, which he did in the very early stages of his career.
After England’s dismal World Cup showing, there is expected to be a mass cull of players who will be considered either too old or not good enough to play for England anymore, as they look to build towards the 2019 World Cup. For Ewers, this potentially means a chance to impress in the upcoming Six Nations, where there will be opportunities for the new boys to impress.
His coach, Rob Baxter, speaking to Talksport said:
“There is no doubt Dave is one of the best young back-row forwards in the country,”
“I think in many people’s opinion he was unlucky not to be in or around that [England] World Cup group.”
“If Dave continues to improve in the way that he is and plays in the manner that he plays and does things as well as he does – particularly if we show success as a side – then I am sure that international recognition is just around the corner for him.”
However, Ewers main focus will be on making sure Exeter have a good start to the season and will be looking to build on their 5th place last season, where they just missed out on the play-offs.
