Williams and Amos ruled out of World Cup

James Hook and Gareth Anscombe have been called up to the Wales squad as injury replacements.

Both Scott Williams (knee) and Hallam Amos (shoulder) suffered tournament-ending injuries during the momentous victory over England on Saturday night.

The injured pair will undergo further assessments while full-back Liam Williams will also miss the match against Fiji having suffered a concussion on the weekend.

The return of Hook and Anscombe to the squad is an indication of how much has happened to Warren Gatland’s side in recent weeks.

Hook was dropped and left in the international wilderness, with many believing he had played his last test for his country.

Meanwhile, Anscombe himself missed out on the tournament through injury – a rolled ankle meaning he was cut from the 31 players chosen.

But a freakish number of injuries have seen the fates turn for both these playmakers but how Wales will line up against Fiji remains to be seen.

George North had been touted to move to the centre, but with few wing options in the squad and Hook capable of playing there at test level, he should likely keep his current position.

However, he will not be facing the threat of Nemani Nadolo who is suspended for Thursday’s match.

The giant wing was cited following for “an illegal act of foul play” during the match against Australia.
