Wales injury crisis deepens as hat-trick hero ruled out

Wales and Warren Gatland have been hit by another setback as hat-trick hero Cory Allen is set to miss the rest of the Rugby World Cup after injuring his hamstring in their opening 54-9 win over Uruguay.

It comes as a bitter blow to the squad, who had already lost Leigh Halfpenny and Rhys Webb before the start of the tournament, while the BBC reported that Gatland admitted that there were fears surrounding the fitness of props Samson Lee and Paul James, who both have calf injuries and Aaron Jarvis is also a concern.

Liam Williams and Dan Lydiate were also removed from play against Uruguay, but neither injury looks too serious and Gatland is hoping that both players will be available for their match against England on Saturday.

“It looks like Cory has a significant tear in his hamstring and it looks at this stage like he’ll have to be replaced,” said Gatland.

“He will be scanned tomorrow. Liam will be scanned tomorrow too.

“Liam had a knock on the thigh, but it’s too early to see for next week. We’ll have to wait 24 hours to make an assessment.”

Gatland also admitted that he may have to call up a replacement due to the lack of fit props in the squad: “We may have to make a tough decision in terms of the props, because we have to have five props.

“At the moment, we’ve only got three that could take the field and we have to have four.”
