Anscombe out as Wales announce squad

Gareth Anscombe was the biggest name to miss out as Warren Gatland announced his 31-man squad for the World Cup.

The Kiwi-born fly-half had impressed in training and off the bench against Ireland in Cardiff but an ankle injury sustained last week has resulted in the Cardiff Blues pivot missing out

He will be replaced in the squad by Bristol outside-half Matthew Morgan, who will be competing with Dan Biggar and Rhys Priestland for the No. 10 shirt.

Gloucester flanker Ross Moriarty has also been left out of the squad, with James King selected ahead of him. The ability of King to cover lock likely to have swayed that decision.

Elsewhere Samson Lee is included despite not playing since rupturing an Achilles tendon in March against Ireland.

Full-back Liam Williams has also been named in the squad while he recovers from surgery on an injured foot.

Speaking about the pair, Gatland said:

Samson could be fit for Uruguay. It’s a progression with him. Liam had a bit of foot pain last week and we were concerned there could be some damage to the plate that went in so for him the plan is that he’ll be right for Uruguay.

Wing Alex Cuthbert managed to keep his place, despite speculation he was vulnerable, with the Blues wing seeing off the challenge of Eli Walker.

Alongside Anscombe, Moriarty and Walker to miss out were props Scott Andrews and Rob Evans, hooker Kristian Dacey and centre Tyler Morgan.

A surprise inclusion was Blues centre Cory Allen who had yet to feature in any of the warm-up matches.

Wales face Italy at home this Saturday before beginning their World Cup campaign against Uruguay at the Millenium Stadium on 20 September.
