Reigning world champions New Zealand have today announced their 31-man Rugby World Cup squad ahead of the start of the tournament set to be held in England and Wales.
And as reported by Sky Sports, the biggest absentees from the final squad are Israel Dagg and Cory Jane, who have failed to earn a call-up despite both starting in the 2011 final where the All Blacks beat France 8-7.
Lima Sopoaga was also unable to impress enough to earn a place in the squad, however winger Waisake Naholo, who broke his leg on his international debut against Argentina in July, has been included despite fears that he would not make it in time after being expected to be on the sidelines for three months.

Richie McCaw could be set to captain his country at the tournament for the final time but has hinted that he may continue to play as speculation regarding the flanker’s future became rife as many believed that this tournament may be the 34-year-old’s final swan song in an All Blacks jersey.
New Zealand will undoubtedly be considered as favourites for the tournament once again while coach Steve Hansen has a wealth of experience to choose from, with the squad boasting over 1,500 caps between them although 17 players are set to play at only their first Rugby World Cup.
Hansen said in the squad announcement press conference: ” “We believe we have selected players with the right mix of experience, x-factor, determination and mental strength.
“This is an exciting and talented group of players who are looking to do something that hasn’t been done before, and make New Zealanders proud.
“We know that there are some players who are disappointed. We are a tight-knit family and it’s always difficult when players miss out.”

Hansen also added that there may still be hope for the players who failed to make the cut, stating: “I’m sure it won’t be the last time a lot of the players who have missed out play for the All Blacks.
“As we have seen in previous Rugby World Cups, anything can happen with injuries, and we want those players to be ready to step in if needed.”
New Zealand have been placed in Pool C at the World Cup alongside Argentina, Tonga, Georgia and Namibia and will play their opening game at Wembley on September 20 against Argentina.
