Ronan O’Gara has signed a landmark contract extension with La Rochelle, committing his future to the French club until 2031.
The unprecedented multi-year deal cements the club’s long-term strategy and effectively rules the former Ireland international out of immediate test-level coaching vacancies. O’Gara joined the coaching ticket in 2019 following spells with Racing 92 and the Crusaders. He swiftly transformed the squad, guiding them to their first major silverware with back-to-back European Champions Cup victories in 2022 and 2023.
Rumours had been circulating around a potential move to his former playing rivals, Leinster, as his contract expiry lined up with Leo Cullen’s upcoming exit.
The new contract expires in 2031, the same date of expiry as Andy Farrell’s contract with Ireland. The rumours will no doubt begin shortly after the 2027 World Cup.
Ronan O’Gara commits to La Rochelle
The head coach expressed his dedication to building a lasting dynasty in France. Speaking to the club website, as quoted by BBC Sport, he said: “My family and I are very happy and proud to continue this adventure with Stade Rochelais.”
Reflecting on his tenure, he noted: “We have lived through exceptional times and gone through more difficult times together. In each of them, I felt the confidence of the club and the support of our supporters.”
The squad has made a formidable start to the current Top 14 campaign. After toppling Toulouse on the opening weekend, they secured a narrow 21-20 away victory over Toulon last Saturday. The outfit will now turn their attention to a domestic clash against Racing 92 this weekend.
A Top 14 title would mean a lot of the city.
“I want to continue to grow this team and win with Stade Rochelais,” O’Gara concluded.
