The Lions finished the URC season with a disappointing defeat to Leinster, where they were defeated by 49 points. They had made a big push in the final stage of the season, winning six in a row to book their place in the top eight. They finished the year with three losses in a row in Ireland.

The All Blacks got the test matches off to a dream start as they defeated the Springboks by 17 points at Ellis Park. The test side scored five tries, including three in the second-half, while only conceding three points in that half. The All Blacks remain undefeated udner Dave Rennie and this game against the Lions will allow the head-coach to get a good look at the remainder of his squad depth before the remaining three tests.

The three other matches against the URC franchises have been dominant, although the opening game against the Stormers was the closest that a URC side has come to causing the All Blacks trouble, while the touring side scored over 50 points in the other two games.
