Strong Stomers performance earns one Springbok call up

An outstanding performance from veteran Deon Fourie for the Stormers against the All Blacks has earned him a call up to the Springboks squad by Rassie Erasmus.

Fourie is due to turn 40 on September and the Stormers head coach was quick to heap praise on the back rower after defeat to the All Blacks, stating, “An incredible performance … for a guy who’s again coming back from a serious injury.

“He’s almost 40. He made three tackles in 15 seconds, and two of them were try-saving.”

Fourie had been injured by a croc roll from Iain Henderson of Ulster in May and picked up a serious knee injury, but seems to have recovered well.

The news of his call up to as reported by SA Rugby Magazine.

Fourie’s history with the Springboks

Fourie made his Currie Cup debut 20 years ago for Western Province and for the next eight seasons, he was involved with the Stormers. The back rower then made the move to France, playing for Lyon and Grenoble. He made the return to the Stormers in 2021 and at the age of 35 was handed his Springboks debut in 2022.

Fourie’s versatility saw him named as a replacement hooker for the World Cup final in 2023, where he played the final 15 minutes.
