England Injury Carnage: Furbank, Mitchell Sidelined for Nations Campaign

England’s Nations Championship campaign has been struck by a devastating injury crisis that has forced Steve Borthwick into emergency squad surgery and threatens to derail the Red Rose’s bid to compete at the highest level of the new tournament format.

Full-back George Furbank is sidelined with appendicitis following emergency medical treatment, while scrum-half Alex Mitchell suffered a hamstring injury during England’s demolition of Fiji (73-8), leaving the squad depleted in critical positions ahead of Saturday’s final Nations Championship clash against Argentina.

The injuries have compounded selection headaches for Borthwick’s squad. Wing Cadan Murley was forced off with a shoulder injury at Ellis Park, while lock Beno Obano has been ruled out entirely, creating holes across the forward and backline depth.

In response, England have turned to emerging talent, calling up Newcastle Red Bulls scrum-half Raffi Quirke as injury cover for the Mitchell situation. The development squad star represents a significant step up in profile and will hope to make an impact should he be required to feature.

Furbank’s appendicitis diagnosis is particularly concerning, as it raises questions over his availability for the remainder of the summer tour. Mitchell’s hamstring, suffered in a brief second-half cameo against Fiji, represents another blow to a squad already managing the aftermath of their Nations Championship opening defeat to South Africa (45-21).

Despite the injury toll, England remain committed to competing for Nations Championship silverware, though Borthwick will need to carefully manage the squad’s fitness and selection for the Argentina encounter.
