Portugal’s Nations Cup opening defeat now carries an immediate disciplinary aftershock.
World Rugby has confirmed that Manuel Variero and Pedro Vicente will both appear before a Foul Play Review Committee after being sent off in Portugal’s 30-29 defeat by the USA in Denver on 4 July.
The cases give Scott Lawrence’s Eagles another sharp storyline from a result already loaded with meaning. The USA edged the match through Christopher Hilsenbeck’s late penalty, but Portugal’s discipline now becomes the bigger issue before the next round of the World Rugby Nations Cup.
What World Rugby Confirmed
According to World Rugby’s disciplinary update, Variero was shown red for an offence contrary to Law 9.11, listed as dangerous play for striking or kicking.
Vicente was also cited under Law 9.11 in the same match, with World Rugby stating the offence related to stamping. Both hearings are scheduled for Monday, 6 July.
- Match: USA 30-29 Portugal
- Venue: DICK’S Sporting Goods Park, Denver
- Competition: World Rugby Nations Cup
- Hearing date: Monday, 6 July
Why It Matters
Portugal arrived as one of the form sides in the second-tier global competition, but the USA result has changed the tone quickly. World Rugby’s round-one review noted that Portugal conceded repeated penalties after the break, allowing Hilsenbeck to keep the Eagles in range before his decisive kick.
The expedited off-field sanction process also matters. World Rugby says the Nations Cup trial uses a 12-hour citing window after full-time, with the FPRC ordinarily meeting after each match weekend.

For Lawrence and the USA, the table value is already banked. For Portugal, the real cost of Denver may now be measured by availability.
