Maxime Lucu will captain France against New Zealand in Christchurch after Fabien Galthie named a Bordeaux-heavy side for Saturday’s opening Nations Championship fixture.
The selection gives France a clear club spine for one of the tournament’s launch matches, with Le Parisien reporting eight Bordeaux-Begles players in the starting XV, led by Lucu at scrum-half and Matthieu Jalibert at fly-half.
Why Lucu’s role matters
Lucu’s captaincy lands with Antoine Dupont unavailable and France delaying the involvement of several Top 14 finalists until later in the July block. That turns the opener into a test of cohesion as much as depth.
Damian Penaud’s return on the wing adds finishing power, while Jefferson Poirot, Maxime Lamothe, Marko Gazzotti, Pierre Bochaton and Yoram Moefana deepen the Bordeaux influence across the team.
New Zealand have already named Ardie Savea as captain for the Christchurch match, with the All Blacks framing the fixture as the first step in a new tournament era. ReadRugbyUnion has already looked at Ruben Love’s All Blacks selection, but France’s response is built on a very different logic: familiarity first, disruption second.
The wider context is significant. World Rugby’s new competition structure puts July results into a meaningful table, rather than a loose tour narrative.
For Galthie’s staff, the immediate question is whether that club chemistry can travel quickly enough to survive Christchurch’s tempo.
