Joe Schmidt has cooled talk of a fast return to Leinster as his final Wallabies stretch moves into its decisive July window.
The outgoing Australia head coach was asked about the Leinster job after naming his side for Saturday’s Nations Championship opener against Ireland in Sydney. The Irish Times reported that Schmidt said the role was not of current interest, while also strongly indicating he does not expect to coach another international team.
That matters because Schmidt’s Wallabies handover is already in motion. Les Kiss is due to take control after Australia’s July Tests, and The Guardian framed the Ireland match as the start of Schmidt’s farewell run before France and Italy complete the southern-hemisphere block.
Why Schmidt’s stance matters
Schmidt’s comments narrow the noise around two live markets: Leinster’s long-term succession planning and Australia’s post-Schmidt reset. The former Ireland boss remains an obvious name whenever a Dublin vacancy is discussed, but his public position gives Leinster less reason to wait for a nostalgic solution.
For Australia, the timing is useful. Schmidt has just selected a side featuring Jock Campbell’s Test return, Ryan Lonergan’s first start, Carter Gordon at fly-half and Lachlan Shaw as a potential debutant, as Rugby Australia confirmed.
Read Rugby Union has already analysed the Wallabies team call and Schmidt’s earlier successor selection influence. This latest signal makes the handover feel sharper: Schmidt is not just naming his last teams, he is starting to close the door behind them.
