Hollie Davidson’s latest appointment has given England’s Nations Championship meeting with Fiji a landmark subplot before the ball is kicked in Liverpool.
World Rugby has confirmed Davidson will referee Fiji v England on 11 July, making her the first Scottish official to take charge of 50 tests. The appointment sits inside the wider Southern Hemisphere Series schedule, with 16 referees from eight nations covering 18 Nations Championship matches between 4 and 18 July.
Why the appointment matters
Davidson is not being framed as a symbolic add-on; she is part of World Rugby’s front-line appointments panel at the launch of a tournament built by Six Nations Rugby and SANZAAR. Her 50th test will come in a fixture involving England, Fiji and a new competition format designed to sharpen northern-versus-southern exposure before the 2027 World Cup.
The governing body also confirmed Luke Pearce will take charge of the opening New Zealand-France test in Christchurch, while Angus Gardner has Argentina v England on 18 July.
For England, the immediate rugby question remains how Steve Borthwick’s side handle Fiji’s speed after the South Africa opener. But Davidson’s appointment gives the Liverpool test a broader edge: officiating pathways are now part of the Nations Championship’s credibility test, not a side note.
