Alex Callender’s return gives Wales’ Barbarians double-header a clear centre of gravity.
Steve Tandy and Sean Lynn have named their Wales XVs for Saturday’s uncapped fixtures against Barbarian F.C. at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham, with Dewi Lake captaining the men’s side at 2pm and Callender leading the women at 5pm.
The official announcement confirmed four uncapped replacements in the men’s squad: Rhys Barratt, Ben Warren, Ryan Woodman and Harrison Keddie. The women’s match-day group carries an even stronger development edge, with Amy Williams, Kelsie Webster, Stella Orrin, Lucy Isaac and Lily Hawkins all in line for first senior Wales appearances.
Callender return changes the tone
Callender’s selection is the headline because Wales badly need leadership ballast around a young side. Eleven of the women’s starting XV are aged 22 or under, while 14 have come through Brython Thunder or Gwalia Lightning in Celtic Challenge rugby.
Lynn called Callender the “emotional heartbeat” of the side in the official team release, a telling phrase before a fixture that sits outside the Test arena but inside Wales’ wider rebuild.
For Tandy, the men’s fixture is a bridge into the Nations Championship block, with Fiji next on the schedule. The inclusion of Jac Morgan, Aaron Wainwright and Dillon Lewis gives Wales hardened Test quality, but the bench tells the sharper story: this is a controlled look at who can travel from promise into pressure.
