Henry Pollock has earned public praise from Rassie Erasmus before England’s Nations Championship opener against South Africa in Johannesburg.
The Springboks head coach highlighted Pollock while discussing England’s squad ahead of a demanding trip to Ellis Park. England are due to arrive in Johannesburg on Thursday, with Marcus Smith stressing that the squad want to make a fast start against the world champions.
England have been preparing for the high-altitude challenge at Bagshot, including oxygen-mask work, before a fixture that immediately tests their new tournament campaign. South Africa will also have inside familiarity through former RFU staff Felix Jones and Joe Lewis in the Springbok setup.
That makes Pollock’s spotlight especially interesting. He is still a young figure in Test rugby, but the attention around him is already travelling beyond England.
Pollock attention adds another layer
Erasmus compared the attention around Pollock to the way people discuss Siya Kolisi, while making the point that output matters more than hype. That is both praise and a challenge before a match where England will need physical authority from the start. Pollock’s response, particularly around the breakdown and collision area, could now become one of the sharper subplots of the week.
The comments were reported in the Guardian’s build-up to England’s South Africa opener, underlining how quickly Pollock has become part of the pre-match conversation.
