Ireland captain Caelan Doris has been ruled out of the Nations Championship Southern Hemisphere Series, with Dan Sheehan now set to lead Andy Farrell’s squad on tour.
Doris has withdrawn with a foot injury and Tommy O’Brien is also out with a groin issue, both setbacks coming after Leinster’s United Rugby Championship final win over the Bulls. Bryn Ward and Zac Ward, the uncapped Ulster brothers, have been called into the squad as replacements, according to an official Ireland squad update.
Ireland’s tour depth is tested before Australia opener
The timing matters because Ireland open the July programme against Australia on Saturday 4 July, before facing Japan on 11 July and New Zealand on 18 July. Losing Doris removes the captain, a senior back-row anchor and one of Farrell’s most reliable Test-match leaders before the squad has even left for Sydney.
Sheehan’s elevation gives Ireland continuity from the Leinster core, but it also changes the tone of the tour. The Ward brothers now join a travelling group that already includes uncapped Connacht trio Billy Bohan, Sam Illo and Sean Jansen, giving Farrell five uncapped options to manage across three demanding fixtures.
For Ireland supporters, the key question is no longer only how Farrell balances the back row without Doris. It is whether Sheehan’s leadership and the fresh call-ups can turn an injury-hit squad into a useful Nations Championship reset.
