World Rugby will remove the home-weighting element from its rankings system from 1 July 2026, changing how international results are calculated before the new Nations Cup window.
The governing body has confirmed the adjustment on its official rankings hub, saying the change is designed to reflect the sport’s evolving international landscape. Until now, the home side has effectively been treated as three rating points stronger for rankings calculations, reducing the points gained for a home win and increasing the damage of a home defeat.
That factor will disappear from 1 July, meaning neutral, home and away Test matches will no longer carry that specific built-in handicap. World Rugby chair Dr Brett Robinson’s organisation is making the move just before a busy July programme, when cross-hemisphere fixtures and Nations Cup matches will sharpen the table.
Why The Rankings Change Matters
The change is technical, but its consequences could be visible quickly. Nations chasing seeding positions, World Cup draw advantages and top-tier credibility will now see every result processed without the old home adjustment.
World Rugby says the change takes effect from 1 July, according to its latest rankings update.
For supporters, the key point is simple: away wins will still matter, but they will no longer be boosted by the same home-weighting mechanism. That could make the rankings race feel more direct when England, Ireland, France, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia return to full summer Test action.
