Dan Sheehan will captain Ireland on their summer tour after Caelan Doris and Tommy O’Brien were ruled out through injury. The Leinster hooker has been handed the armband by Andy Farrell for the Nations Championship Southern Hemisphere Series, with Ireland due to face Australia in Sydney on 4 July, Japan in Newcastle on 11 July and New Zealand in Auckland on 18 July.

The change follows a difficult injury update for Farrell. Doris has been ruled out with a foot injury, while O’Brien is unavailable with a groin problem, according to RTE’s latest Ireland squad update.

Farrell’s Ireland Squad Gets A Late Ulster Twist

The reshuffle has also opened the door for fresh faces. Ulster brothers Bryn Ward and Zac Ward have been called up, alongside Connacht trio Billy Bohan, Sam Illo and Sean Jansen, giving the tour a sharper development edge as Ireland manage a lengthy absentee list.

Sheehan’s promotion is the headline for Ireland supporters. He is already one of Farrell’s most trusted forwards, and the captaincy now puts him at the centre of a demanding three-Test block that will test Ireland’s depth against elite southern-hemisphere opposition.

For the uncapped players, the timing is just as significant. With Doris, O’Brien and several other established names unavailable, Farrell has a chance to stress-test new combinations before the next stage of Ireland’s cycle.
