The Hurricanes booked their place in the final with a more than convincing win over the Blues in Wellington. Their only loss in the last eight came on the final day of the regular season against Crusaders when the Canes already had the league secured and rotated their sides. In the semi-final they beat the Blues 57-21. They took the lead in the second minute after a controversial Cam Roigard incident, where he appeared to exaggerate an injury before quick-tapping.

The Canes went on to score nine tries, while only conceding three. The game was 19-14 at halftime, but six second-half tries sealed the win.

The Chiefs booked their place in the final with a massive win over the Crusaders. The Chiefs had won 10 of their final 11 matches, with the only defeat coming away to the Crusaders in the regular season, who are undefeated in their new stadium. In the semi-final, when they welcomed the Crusaders, they won it comprehensively, 49-12. The Chiefs scored six of their seven tries in the first half, with the other coming in the final moments. The Crusaders scored one in either half.
