Irish bound signing puts in hattrick performance in the Gallagher PREM

Ulster-bound, Jamie Benson scored three tries as Harlequins scored an impressive 76 points to beat the Newcastle Red Bulls and move away from the Red Bulls as the bottom two sides.

It was announced in April that Benson would join Ulster as an Irish-qualified player. Despite being an England Under-20 and England A squad member.

Benson’s player profile

Benson is an out-half and full-back and has been at Harlequins for his entire professional career.

The Quin is a smart man too, spending time studying at Cambridge, and he spent the 2023-24 season on loan at the Cambridge Rugby Club.

He played in the famous Varsity Match between Cambridge and Oxford from 2022 to 2024. He was named in the England A squad, which took on the All-Black XV in November. The squad featured incredible players like Noah Caluori and Adam Radwan.

In the 2025-26 season, he has mostly been playing full-back and as backup to Marcus Smith.

Story of the Ulsterman’s hat-trick

Harlequins pulled off one of their best performances of the season as they hammered the Newcastle Red Bulls 76-17 away from home.

Benson scored the second, ninth and 10th of the game as Harlequins scored 12 tries in the game.

The full-back showed his ability coming into the line and connecting with the rest of his back as he scored the three tries.

Where will Benson fit into Ulster?

Benson will be a useful addition to the Ulster backline, particularly with his versatility.

Ulster currently rely heavily on Jack Murphy at 10. Replacements Jake Flannery and James Humphreys have had good moments but haven’t been particularly reliable when putting a full performance together.

The same can also be said at full-back. Jacob Stockdale isn’t a natural full-back. Mike Lowry has quality but can struggle with the physical nature of some games.
