Dragons fans have made a social media push to send off one of their best recent players.
On Saturday, the Dragons will host Edinburgh in their final home game of the 2025/26 season. The game will see Aaron Wainwright play his final game at Rodney Parade, having played there since 2017.
The number eight won every player of the year award in the 2019 season for the Dragons, and has played 67 times for Wales.
Wainwright’s farewell from Rodney Parade
The Dragon’s Lair Podcast made a post on X to call for as many fans of the Dragons to get out and support the club for their final home game of the season, and Wainwright’s farewell.
The Dragons have had a difficult season and currently sit 14th. There are just two games remaining in the URC season. This may be a stage of the season where attendances at Rodney Parade could drop. It is understandable then that the fan-run podcasts are keen to get as many fans into the stadium as possible to farewell Wainwright.
Aaron Wainwright’s next move
Aaron Wainwright is set for a move to Leicester Tigers in the Gallagher PREM next season, a move that was announced in January.
The 25-cap rule means that Wainwright will still be eligible to play for the Welsh national team due to his 67 caps gathered so far.
The 25-cap rule means that players who have fewer than 25 caps for Wales cannot be considered for international selection.
Fellow Wales stars Dewi Lake and Jac Morgan are also leaving the Welsh regions, both signing for Gloucester. They will join fellow Welsh internationals Tomos Williams and Max Llewellyn at Kingsholm.
The struggles in Welsh rugby
The Welsh struggles go beyond losing a few key players to the PREM. Due to financial difficulties, the WRU are set to drop funding for one of its regions. They will go from four to three. This leaves a quarter of all the professional players and staff within the nation at risk of losing their jobs. Wales struggled at the beginning of the Six Nations in 2026 but grew into the tournament, ending with a win against Italy on the final day. Wainwright was a huge part of this success, leading from the front with his powerful ball carrying and ferocious defence. The number eight scored two tries in the final win against Italy and was named player of the match.
