Hurricanes head coach Clark Laidlaw has turned to squad depth for this weekend’s Super Rugby Pacific fixture, with injuries forcing key changes ahead of the meeting with Moana Pasifika.

Roigard and Love sidelined

The Hurricanes will be without two of their most influential backs. Cam Roigard faces up to a month out, while Ruben Love is expected to return more quickly after a short-term issue.

Their absence removes attacking control and tempo from the Hurricanes’ spine, forcing a reshuffle in both playmaking and game management.

Laidlaw has also opted to rest several senior figures, including Jordie Barrett, Peter Lakai and Warner Dearns, signalling a calculated rotation rather than a full disruption.

Naholo returns after long layoff

The headline positive comes with the return of Kini Naholo, who is set to feature for the first time in nearly a year.

Naholo’s recovery from an ACL tear—and a subsequent setback—has tested his patience, but his return offers the Hurricanes renewed threat out wide. His pace and finishing ability add a different dimension to a backline missing key creators.

Laidlaw highlighted the winger’s persistence.

“He’s done an unreal job with his recovery. It’s never a straight line back from big injuries, but he’s put himself in a great position.”

Opportunities across the squad

The enforced changes open the door for others to step up. Vernon Bason earns a first start at hooker, while Brad Shields returns to the starting side. Lucas Cashmore continues his development with another appearance, and Jone Rova slots into the midfield.

This rotation reflects both necessity and intent. The Hurricanes are not simply covering absences—they are testing depth at a crucial stage of the season.

No complacency against Moana Pasifika

Despite their own disruptions, the Hurricanes are not expecting an easy fixture.

Moana Pasifika, playing under uncertainty about their future in the competition, have shown physical edge and resilience in recent performances. That context adds an emotional layer to the contest.

Laidlaw acknowledged the challenge.

“They were really physical last week. We understand exactly what sort of game we’re walking into.”

A test of depth and composure

For the Hurricanes, this match will reveal more than just squad strength. It will test their ability to adapt without key leaders and maintain momentum in a competitive season.

Injuries have forced change, but they also present opportunity. How the Hurricanes respond may shape their trajectory over the coming weeks.
