Experienced prop extends stay in Swansea

Tom Botha has signed a new contract with the Ospreys, extending his stay with the region as one of their most experienced and dependable figures.

The 35-year-old tight-head prop has become a central figure since arriving from the Cheetahs in 2018, making 161 appearances in Ospreys colours.

While the club has not disclosed the length of the new deal, the agreement ensures continuity in a position where experience remains crucial.

A second home and a leadership role

Botha spoke openly about his connection to the club and the role he now plays within the squad.

“This club has become a second home for me, so I’m happy to be continuing my career here,” he said. “I have had the privilege of playing alongside and learning from some incredible players in my time here.”

Now firmly one of the senior figures in the dressing room, Botha sees his responsibility extending beyond his performances on the pitch.

“I’m now in a position in my career where I can pass on that knowledge to some of the younger boys coming through, whilst still giving my all on the field for this great club.”

That balance—contributing on matchday while mentoring emerging talent—has become increasingly valuable for teams navigating both performance demands and long-term development.

Set-piece stability remains a priority

Head coach Mark Jones highlighted Botha’s importance to the Ospreys’ forward platform, particularly at the scrum.

“Tom has been an incredible servant to this club and a key factor behind our set-piece success as a team in recent seasons,” said Jones.

Tight-head prop remains one of the most specialised roles in rugby union, and Botha’s consistency has provided the Ospreys with a reliable foundation. His durability has also stood out, with Jones pointing to his availability as a defining strength.

“The fact he has managed to mount up as many appearances as he has speaks volumes about his availability and care for the team,” he added.

Blending experience with emerging talent

While Botha’s contract extension secures experience, the Ospreys are also looking to the future.

Jones emphasised the importance of depth in the front row, particularly given the increasing influence of the scrum in modern rugby.

“With the specialised nature of the tight-head position and the ever-growing influence of the scrum, the importance of quality in depth on that front is vital,” he said.

“We’ve got the ideal balance of experience and high-potential players coming through at three, so we’re excited by that department moving forward.”

Continuity during a period of change

The decision to retain Botha comes at a time when the Ospreys continue to navigate change both on and off the field.

Securing experienced players offers stability, while also supporting the development of younger prospects within the squad.

The next chapter will look familiar for Botha—anchoring the scrum, guiding teammates and continuing to contribute to a club he now considers home.
