Ethan Roots has received a three-match ban following an incident that left Jack Innard concussed during a Premiership clash at Kingsholm.

The Exeter Chiefs forward struck Innard while the Gloucester hooker was on the ground in the closing moments of Sunday’s fixture.

Officials issued Roots a 20-minute red card at the time, with the subsequent disciplinary process confirming further punishment.

Incident mars Premiership contest

The moment overshadowed the closing stages of what had been a competitive encounter between Gloucester Rugby and Exeter.

Innard required medical attention following the contact and was later confirmed to have suffered a concussion.

Roots, who has earned four caps for England national rugby union team, addressed the incident during the hearing and made clear there was no ill intent behind his actions.

“We have no personal animosity at all,” he said. “To the contrary he is a friend and my brother who also plays for Exeter has rented his house since Jack joined Gloucester.”

Roots explains ‘split-second’ reaction

The 28-year-old explained that the incident stemmed from a tackle moments earlier, which aggravated a leg injury he had sustained during the second half.

“He came in very low and his shoulder came into contact with my leg exactly on the injury I had just received,” Roots said.

“This was very painful. I reacted by pushing my hand down on his head. It was not a strong hit and there was no closed fist or anything like that.

“I have tried to rationalise what happened, and why, and I have no idea what I was trying to do or achieve. It was a split second response to pain and frustration and I am very sorry for it.”

Medical staff had earlier treated Roots’ injury, removing debris from the synthetic surface before stitching the wound, before the incident.

Ban reduced following disciplinary hearing

An independent Rugby Football Union disciplinary panel initially set a six-match suspension as the entry point for the offence.

However, that sanction was reduced to three games due to Roots’ early admission of guilt and clean disciplinary record.

The ban means Roots will miss Exeter’s upcoming European Challenge Cup semi-final against Ulster Rugby.

Exeter forced to reshuffle

The suspension arrives at a crucial stage of the season, with Exeter competing on multiple fronts. Losing an experienced forward like Roots will test squad depth as they prepare for a demanding run of fixtures.

While the player has expressed clear remorse, the incident serves as a reminder of the fine margins in elite rugby.

Physical intensity, fatigue and split-second decisions can carry significant consequences.
