Stormers Target Historic URC Double, Dobson says “No Excuses”

The Stormers head into the final stretch of the United Rugby Championship season with history within reach, and director of rugby John Dobson has made the message clear.

There is no room for excuses.

After their European campaign ended in narrow fashion, the focus in Cape Town has shifted entirely to the league, where the Stormers are chasing both top spot and a potential attendance record.

Title race firmly in their hands

With four rounds to play, the Stormers sit second in the table, four points behind Glasgow Warriors. That gap could disappear quickly, with Glasgow still to visit Cape Town in what looks set to be a decisive clash.

Before that, attention turns to a crucial home game against Connacht Rugby, followed by away trips to Ulster Rugby and Cardiff Rugby.

“The opportunity is entirely within our hands,” Dobson said. “There are no excuses. We don’t have to worry about Europe. It’s about taking this chance.”

European exit sharpens focus

The Stormers were edged out 28–27 by RC Toulon in the Investec Champions Cup quarter-finals, a result that could easily have knocked momentum.

Instead, it seems to have sharpened it.

“The players were irritated by the loss, but their confidence wasn’t shattered,” Dobson said. “It showed us we’re close, but also where we need to improve.”

That review period has helped reset the squad ahead of the URC run-in.

Connacht test demands full focus

Despite their strong position, Dobson has been quick to shut down any talk of easy fixtures, starting with Connacht.

“It’s a desperate Connacht team and those sides are always dangerous,” he said. “They’ve got a strong attack and they’ve caused us problems before. It’s a massive game for us.”

With the margins so tight at the top, anything less than a full performance could prove costly.

The advantage of finishing first

Ending the regular season at the top of the table would give the Stormers control of their own path in the play-offs.

It would likely mean other contenders facing off before a potential final in Cape Town, a scenario that could tilt the balance.

“If you finish first, you put yourself in a strong position,” Dobson said. “Other big teams take each other out, and then they have to come here.”

Record crowds within reach

Off the field, the Stormers are also closing in on a URC attendance record currently held by Leinster Rugby.

They have already attracted close to 200,000 supporters across seven home games and need a strong turnout in their remaining fixtures to surpass that figure.

“We’ve got a chance to break the record,” Dobson said. “We want people to come out, support the team and be part of it.”

Playing for more

The Connacht fixture will also carry emotional significance, with the squad set to honour long-serving team manager Chippie Solomon following his passing.

It adds another layer to a game that already carries weight in the context of the season.

A moment to take

The Stormers have put themselves in a strong position. Now it comes down to execution.

Four games remain. The path is clear. The margin for error is small.

If they take their chances, they will not just compete for the title. They will shape the outcome of the season on their own terms.
