How many points are needed to qualify for the United Rugby Championship top eight?

The United Rugby Championship is reaching an exciting point in the 2026 season, with five games left in the season at the time of publishing.

Since the URC expanded to include four South African sides for the 2021-22 season, the structure for qualification of the knockout stages also changed. There is one collective table for the 16 teams, and the top eight qualify for the playoffs. There is also an incentive for finishing in the top four, as this allows for a home draw in the quarter finals. Each position is ranked for the playoffs with first playing eighth, second playing seventh etc.

The history of the United Rugby Championship playoff qualification

2023-24Ospreys50Glasgow Warriors65 points
2022-23Sharks48Glasgow Warriors 63 points
2021-22Glasgow Warriors50Bulls58 points

With only four seasons of the URC having been played, there is a limited data set to look at. In the four years since the format changed, 48 points has been enough to make it into eighth twice, while 50 points has been enough on the other two. The top four have been a bit more varied, ranging from 58 points to 65 points for the top four and a home quarter-final.

Looking towards the current top eight, we have the Bulls on 35 points, who are level on points with Connacht in ninth. If, based on the four years of data, we assume 50 points guarantees a place in the top eight. With five games remaining, this would require Connacht or the Bulls to pick up 15 points from the final five games. With 48 points being the minimum that has seen a team qualify for eighth place, it would take a perfect 25 points from five games for Edinburgh in 13th to qualify.

The top four is a different story compared to previous years. Only four points separate third and seventh, with Leinster in fourth, sitting on 41 points. The most points that a team in fourth have received is 65 points, while the fewest points a team in fourth have received is 58 points. With so few points between these teams in third to seventh, it will be a close call as teams aim for the 60-point mark.
