Rhys Carre has become one of the most viral players in rugby after his incredible try against Ireland.
Just three years ago, he was released from the Welsh Rugby World Cup squad in 2023 due to fitness issues.
Rhys Carre and his early career up until the 2023 World Cup
Carre came through the Cardiff Blues academy, and a few years after breaking into the first team, he made his Wales debut in 2019. He currently plays for Saracens, having previously played for them for a year and then returned to Cardiff.
In late 2022 and 2023, Welsh coaches raised concerns about Carre’s fitness, and he was later not selected for the 2023 World Cup squad for “failing to meet individual performance targets” that had been set for him earlier in the year.
How has Rhys Carre adapted his game since 2023?
Carre’s game has obviously had a change in his mentality since that point. Based on his try against Ireland, we can see he has the pace to burn now for a big prop.
Not only that, he scored in the two matches before this to make this his third try of the Championship. He had already had one held up in this game.
The media reaction has been fantastic following this try. Ben Youngs and Dan Cole exemplified this in their For the Love of Rugby podcast.
Cole was loving the example and love that Carre was providing for his fellow front rowers. When discussing his pace, the former England internationals compared him to the French winger Louis Bielle-Bierry by nicknaming him Rhys Bielle-Carre.
Ben Youngs was also massively impressed with the loosehead prop. He stated that this try is the kind of highlight that could make him an “icon of World Rugby”.
The pair gave this moment their moment of the week despite only one of the games being played at the time of recording. Youngs also commented that it was one of the greatest tries in Six Nations history.
Rhys Carre: History maker
Carre also made history as he became only the sixth prop in international rugby history to score in three matches in a row when he has started.
