Irish Legend, Tommy Bowe, has claimed that Stuart McCloskey had been showing his current level of form for years, but wasn’t given the opportunity to be in the Ireland team.
Bowe played for Ireland 69 times, scoring 30 tries. He also played for Ulster until 2018. He played with McCloskey from 2014 until his retirement.
Bowe’s history as a two-time Lion has set him up for a career in punditry and television since his retirement.
On the Offload Rugby Podcast, Bowe referred to comments that had been circulating that McCloskey had only developed these skills now that he has reached 33. Bowe countered, saying,
“McCloskey has been playing this sort of rugby for Ulster for the last couple of years, and it’s just that he hasn’t been given an opportunity.”
What has Stuart McCloskey proven this Six Nations?
McCloskey has been Ireland’s most consistent performer across the three Six Nations matches so far this year. In the opener against France, it was a difficult match for the Ireland team, but it was McCloskey who provided the assist for the Timoney try, which helped stop them from embarrassment.
Against Italy, McCloskey used his creativity to provide an American Football-style pass to get the ball to fellow Ulsterman Rob Balocoune who scored the try. Looking back on a game won by seven points, this try assist becomes even more crucial.
Against England, McCloskey helped provide an inspired Ireland performance. The most memorable came late in the game when the centre tracked back 60 yards to stop Marcus Smith scoring a certain intercept try.
He made 15 carries (more than any other Irish player), made 56 metres (second-highest Irish total). Was joint-top on the pitch for offloads with two, and the back who made the most tackles on the field. An all-round display that will be remembered for years by Ireland fans.
What had others said about McCloskey?
Brian O’Driscoll was quick to praise McCloskey’s efforts after the game.
The Irish legend was also noted, talking about how McCloskey has come of age in this tournament. The rise to the top has been a long journey. McCloskey made his international debut in 2016, and after a disastrous performance, he didn’t secure a place in the team. He himself says he has felt “vindicated” for his struggles at the time.
Bowe referenced how a lot of the conversation of the media has been about how McCloskey has only become a star in the last few weeks and months.
Why has McCloskey not seen the limelight sooner?
The centre made his international debut in 2016 at Twickenham, the site of his triumphant rise to the top 10 years later.McCloskey commented that he didn’t always see eye-to-eye with Schmidt, and this period came while Farrell was in the setup. While the Irish star has been in the setup for 10 years, he has only played 26 games for his country. Bundee Aki has been a major reason for McCloskey’s oversight. He came into the Ireland set up in 2017 and has been a star ever since. This left Robbie Henshaw, Bundee Aki and Gary Ringrose in his way to a starting role. All of this left McCloskey on the outskirts of the squad or outside of the squad.
