England’s men will go to battle this weekend as they face South Africa in the 2019 Rugby World Cup final. The eyes of the nation will be on Japan as Eddie Jones looks to lead his players to Rugby World Cup glory for the first time since 2003. Ahead of the big game, we’ve taken a look back at the last time English teams reached world finals, in a variety of different sports.
Football World Cup - 1966
England have famously only ever played in one Men’s World Cup final, back in 1996, which they famously won 4-2 over West Germany in extra-time, with Sir Geoff Hurst scoring a hat-trick.
ICC Cricket World Cup - 2019
The last time England’s Men played in a World Cup final, they won it by the slimmest of margins. England and New Zealand tied after 50 overs, then tied in a Super Over too, but England won the game because they had hit more boundaries than the Kiwis.
ICC Women's World Cup - 2017
England’s women are also the reigning world champions. Back in 2017, they beat India by nine runs to claim the trophy for the third time, and the first since 1993.
Men's Field Hockey World Cup - 1986
England have only reached the final of the Men’s Hockey World Cup on one occasion, back in 1986. They lost that game 2-1 to Australia. England have been knocked out at the semi-final stage of the last three tournaments.
Rugby World Cup - 2007
England’s last appearance in the Men’s Rugby Union World Cup final came in 2007, where they lost to South Africa. They’ll be looking for a better result this weekend!
Women’s Rugby Union World Cup - 2017
England’s women reached the final of the Women’s Rugby Union World Cup back in 2017, looking for back-to-back wins following their success in 2014. However, it wasn’t to be as New Zealand won the trophy after beating England 41-32 in the final.
PDC World Cup of Darts - 2016
England last reached the PDC World Cup of Darts back in 2016, where the team of Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor and Adrian’Jackpot” Lewis won the title for a fourth time, beating the Dutch duo of Michael van Gerwen and Raymond van Barneveld.
Rugby League World Cup - 2017
England reached the final of the Men’s Rugby League World Cup in 2017, but in a defensive game, they came out second best, losing 6-0 to Australia.
Men's World Team Squash Championships - 2017
England made the final of the 2017 Men’s World Team Squash Championships in France, having beat Australia in the final. However, they were unable to win the tournament as they lost to Egypt in the final.
Badminton World Team Championships for Women - 1984
Team England reached the final of the Badminton World Team Championships for Women back in 1984 but they were hammered 5-0 by China. That was their one and only finals appearance ever.
