England and Harlequins full-back, Mike Brown has told Sky Sports that England need a team of strong leaders while playing down links that suggest he will be Eddie Jones’s captain for the Six Nations.
Eddie Jones spoke on Tuesday saying that the captain would be just for the Six Nations to start off with and that it had to be the ‘best player’ in the England team. And it must be someone who can lead by ‘example’.
If you look at England’s 2003 World Cup-winning team they probably had a captain in every position on the field. For us as an England team, we need to strive to get that.
Brown was a shining light in England’s abysmal World Cup showing under Stuart Lancaster, but he was still nervous about his chances in being called up to Jones first squad saying that it was ‘nerve-racking’ while waiting for the phone call from England’s new coach.
For myself, I think it is about going into the squad and helping these young guys, these new caps.
The new look England squad brought many surprises with seven uncapped players selected in the 33 man squad with the likes of Tom Wood, Leicester’s Tom Youngs, and Brad Barritt of Saracens all missing out.
