South African centre JJ Engelbrecht has signed for Ospreys on a deal until the end of the season, subject to a work permit.
During his 12 test appearances, Engelbrecht has scored four tries, but the 26-year old has not featured for his country since 2013. He has been at Japan Top League side Toyota Industries Shuttles since July 2015, after leaving Blue Bulls but now his future lies at Ospreys.
General manager Willward was delighted with his new centre:
For Ospreys to secure such a quality player is a major coup.
We look forward to welcoming him to the region, JJ is a much-needed, quality addition to the squad, who not only brings experience at the highest end of the game, but also a real dynamism in the wider channels.
The Ospreys have been on the lookout for a centre for the past few months and made a bid to take Wales international Scott Williams away from the Scarlets before at the end of last year, which was unsuccessful.
Their search has now come to a close with the capture of Engelbrecht, and it is as a timely boost for them ahead of Friday night’s crucial Champions Cup clash with Clermont Auvergne at the Liberty Stadium.
