Halfpenny handed Toulon ultimatum

Leigh Halfpenny has been handed an ultimatum by Toulon over his future at the European giants.

The French club’s owner, Mourad Boudjellal, says he expects the Welshman to join Aviva Premiership side Wasps if a new contract isn’t signed ‘in the next week’.

Talking to The Rugby Paper, Boudjellal said:

If we have no contract agreed with Leigh in the next week for next season, I think he will be going to Wasps.

We are speaking to Leigh and his agent. He has a good proposition from teams in England with Wasps the main one.

The radical owner has made his stance clear, however. He wants Halfpenny to stay but fears it might be out of his control.

We would like him to stay. I don’t know whether he will because in France we have some problems with the salary cap. We hope to have some information in the next week.

Dai Young is reportedly keen to have Halfpenny, but so are Cardiff Blues and Scarlets, should Halfpenny want a Wales return.

According to Wales Online, the Welshman is keen to be allowed to train with Wales and the Lions at every possible opportunity.

Whilst the full-back is currently injured, he’s reportedly due back in March. If that comes to fruition, Halfpenny may make the latter stages of the Six Nations.
