Burgess quits Union

Sam Burgess has quit Bath with immediate effect today in order to complete his return to the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

The news comes only a day after Bath coach Mike Ford expressed his confidence in retaining Burgess’ services and has come as a shock to the rugby world.

Burgess joined Bath from the Australian side last year and made 21 appearances, scoring four tries. He was also included in the England team to play in this year’s World Cup but became a scapegoat for the failures of the side and now it seems the pressure has become too much.

The Englishman held talks with both coach Ford and club captain Stuart Hooper and it was believed that he would remain at Bath until at least the end of his contract but now, the BBC reports that Burgess has terminated his contract with Bath so that he can make the switch back to Rugby League and his beloved South Sydney Rabbitohs.

Bath fans will be left disappointed by Burgess’ decision as they never got to see him reach his full potential in Union and so with his departure, there is a hole left in the Bath side that must be filled.
