Ireland suffer injury crisis

Ireland’s side suffered a trio of injuries during their 24-9 victory over France which saw them finish top of their group and so progress to the quarter-finals of World Cup.

Tries from Kearney and Murray and penalties from Sexton and Madigan saw the Irish overcome a less-than-impressive French side in order to avoid New Zealand in the next round of the competition.

However, the injuries that struck Ireland were the main talking point of the match.

Padraic Halpin, writing for SBS.com, reports that Ireland lost Johnny Sexton, Peter O’Mahoney and captain Paul O’Connell to injury during their clash with France in the Rugby World Cup.

Sexton was substituted from play after only 25 minutes after sustaining a rib injury following a tackle from Louis Picamoles while O’Connell was carried off of the pitch on a stretcher only 15 minutes later.

Mahoney had to be stretchered off the pitch as well after 55 minutes after seeing his foot stick in the ground and cause a serious injury

Phil Walter/Getty Images SportShould O’Connell’s injury prove to be serious, then this may well have been his last match in an Ireland shirt seeing as he planned to retire from international rugby after the World Cup.

Ireland will be hoping that the injuries to their trio will not impact on the result of their next game against Argentina which promises to be lively.
