Richie McCaw hints at playing on after World Cup

According to Planet Rugby, New Zealand captain Richie McCaw has hinted that the door on his international career might not be closed.

The legendary 34 year old outside flanker, who will captain his country during the 2015 World Cup which will be held in England and Wales was meant to be his international swansong to a career that has seen him establish himself as one of the best players to ever grace the game.

However, according to Planet Rugby, in an interview with the New Zealand Herald he revealed may yet play on after the World Cup, here are the quotes from the article-

“I haven’t shut the door totally because I wasn’t sure how I’d feel come the end of October,” the experienced Crusaders flanker told the New Zealand Herald.

“I really wanted to make sure I didn’t get caught up in the ‘it’s your last game here, last game there’ stuff.

“The door is open a little bit but I just want to concentrate on what I’m doing now and get a bit of separation after the World Cup.”

Will the New Zealand captain play on? Or if New Zealand are able to defend their World Cup title, will he see it as the perfect to bow out and allow New Zealand to usher in a new era of players as this team which has dominated world rugby for a decade come to an end.

Not matter what decision the 34 year old comes to, the end of the World Cup will see big changes for the New Zealand team as players like legendary fly half Dan Carter will no longer be available due to his decision to play for Racing Metro in France.

Whatever McCaw’s thoughts on retirement might be, his focus will be on retaining the World Cup, a feat no side has achieved before and a feat his New Zealand side are more than capable of acheiving.
